Woods

New York Flooring installs a large variety of wood floor products, as rare as Burmese teak and African wenge, or as common as Appalachian white oak.

Unfinished Solid Wood Flooring

Unfinished solid wood flooring typically haas to be installed on or above grade level and fastened to a plywood subloor. There are many advantages to using unfinished solid wood flooring:

  • Unfinished solid wood flooring offers a larger variety of domestic and exotic wood species, cuts, grades, widths, and lengths than prefinished products.
  • Unfinished solid wood flooring allows us to offer three different types of cuts:
      • Plain sawn is the most commonly used cut, in which boards typically contain the most variation in color and pattern due to the varying grain patterns that result from cutting that exposes more obvious growth rings.
      • Quarter sawing produces less board feet per log than plain sawing. Therefore, it is typically more expensive than plain sawn boards. Despite the higher cost of quarter sawing procedures, there are several benefits to this particular cut of material:
        • It cups and twists less, wears more evenly, and is considered more stable than plain sawn materials.
        • Its wood tends to have a great deal of flecking or medullary rays, which give the floor a 3-dimensional look.
      • Rift sawn wood is similar to quarter sawn wood, but is cut at a slightly different angle, resulting in a much straighter grain pattern that tends to look slightly cleaner.
  • Some Things to Consider:
    • When ordering quartered or rift sawn material, they generally come together in a varying ratios.
    • On a custom order, you can specify quartered only or rift only; however, a small percentage of either is allowed by the grading.

Parquet Wood Flooring

Parquet wood flooring is marquetry, a time-tested archaic form of wood flooring patterns and installation. Parquet is a term typically used for wood flooring installed in mosaic patterns with the grains in alternating directions from tile to tile. However, parquet is actually much more than that; parquet ranges everything from herringbone to the intricate patterns of geometric designs. Each type of parquet flooring has a distinct look and individual use. The product can be manufactured from species of wood as generic as birch all the way to exotic species, such as African wenge, depending on your taste and sense of style.

There are many advantages to parquet wood flooring, including:

    • Parquet wood flooring comes in a large variety of patterns, species, and sizes.
    • Parquet wood flooring is ideal for those who are looking to make a specific statement in their home with their floor to exhibit a unique culture, period, or genre.
    • Depending on the material, these products can either be glued down or fastened to a plywood subfloor on or above grade level.

Prefinished Solid Wood Flooring

Solid prefinished hardwood flooring is a great choice for those who would like a new solid wood floor without the mess or dust caused by refinishing or the long displacement period required to sand and finish. These products are installed above or on grade level and over a plywood subfloor.

Prefinished solid wood flooring offers a large variety of benefits, such as:

  • Fuming – a process where the wood floor is treated with ammonia in order to achieve a particular color and structural stability
  • Liming – a process where lime is rubbed into the open grain of the wood in order to give a washed appearance
  • Baking – a process where the wood is heated to temperatures over 450 degrees Farenheit in order to increase the wood’s natural pigment in order to deepen color tones.
  • Factor finish innovations such as aluminum oxide and ultra-violetely cured urethane finishes lead to durability that far surpasses that of field finished floors.
  • New technology has allowed manufacturers to offer warantees on the wear of their finishes for up to 25 years, depending on the manufacturer.

Engineered Prefinished Wood Flooring

Engineered hardwood flooring is an ideal choice for those who want the feel of solid wood flooring, but live in an apartment building with installation limitations due to concrete subfloors and height restrictions. These products can be installed either above or below grade level and, in some cases, even over radiant heat.

There are many advantages to installing engineered wood flooring, including:

  • Engineered wood flooring is also more structurally stable than solid flooring due to the alternating grain directions of the plywood core, making it an ideal choice for areas that experience extreme variation in humidity levels, such as New York City.
  • Engineered wood floors can be glued down directly over a clean concrete subfloor or an accoustical padding, making the finished floor height anywhere from 3/8″ to 5/8″, which is significantly smaller than the 1 1/2″ required for a solid wood floor.

There are several types of engineered products on the market, ranging dramatically in quality and price. These products tend to fall into one of two types:

  • Rotary peeledengineered products tend to the be most affordable. However, these products usually have a repetitive grain and look more similar to plastic than real wood, and the top veneer often cracks in dry heat.
  • Dry sawn engineered products have grain and color variations that replicate solid product. In fact, many people have difficulty distinguishing a dry sawn product from a solid product due to this speciality cutting process. There are fewer manufacturers of dry sawn products, resulting in a slightly higher price than is seen for rotary peeled engineered products.

Some Things to Consider:

  • Whether you are looking for a rotary peeled or dry sawn enginered product, they both come in a large variety of domestic and exotic species, colors, and widths.
  • Depending on the product you choose, the flooring can be refinished anywhere from 1-4 times; however, these products generally come from the mill prefinished with a 25 year warrantee.

Floating Prefinished Wood Flooring

Floating hardwood flooring clicks together above the subfloor without the use of nails or adhesive. These products are installed either above or below grade level.

Floating prefinished wood flooring offers several advantages, including:

  • Floating prefinsihed wood has the ability to be installed over radiant heat and in buldings with height limitations
  • Floating prefinsihed wood has the ability to be installed directly over an existing floor
  • A floating floor is not attached to the subfloor in anyway, allowing the floor to be softer under your feet.

Some Things to Consider:

  • In order to function properly, a floating floor has to be allowed to move freely through openings and left adequate room for expansion and contraction.
