Unfinished
Solid Wood Flooring
Over the past twenty years, the percentage of unfinished wood
flooring versus prefinished wood flooring purchased in the United
States has been in a steady decline. Many new home builders as
well as the older generation of flooring contractors still believe
the best floor is one that is jobsite sanded and finished. Some
of the more apparent benefits of purchasing your wood flooring
unfinished are that the available species to choose from is basically
unlimited, as well as the your finishing choices and design capabilities
being greatly increased. (White Oak)
The majority of unfinished wood flooring species used in North
America are those that are
grown and harvested domestically such as oak, maple, and pine.
There is an increasing usage of many species of wood from all
corners of the world that are now finding their way to the U.S.
and Canada such as Brazilian Cherry, Australian Cypress and European
Oak. Many of the manufacturers of decorative borders and custom
designed floors utilize many of the exotic species of wood such
as Paduc, Purpleheart and Ebony because of there dramatic contrast
in respect to most domestic woods. (Hard
Maple)
